Cognitive/Linguistic Treatment
The Cognitive/Linguistic Treatment Program at Good Shepherd Penn Partners provides therapeutic intervention services for individuals who have sustained a brain injury that has altered their ability to manage daily activities.
Individuals referred for cognitive/linguistic treatment are first seen for an evaluation, after which an individualized remediation program is designed. Each remediation program includes short- and long-term goals developed by the patient, family members and a master's level speech/language pathologist. Program assessment will identify deficits in the following areas:
- Attention and ability to concentrate
- Orientation, insight and initiation
- Long- and short-term memory
- Numerical reasoning
- Problem solving/judgment skills
- Ability to process information
- Social skills
- Written expression
- Time management
- Thought organization
- Auditory comprehension
- Reading comprehension
Cognitive/linguistic treatment services also provide students, family and academic professionals with the resources needed to facilitate re-entry into school following brain injury or mild brain injury recovery. When geared toward school-aged patients, cognitive/linguistic treatment will be structured with emphasis on the following:
- Length of school day
- Support services
- Individual learning styles and study skills
- Transportation to and from school
- Adaptive equipment
- Counseling
- Peer support groups
- Social skills
When adult cognitive/linguistic treatment is required, the treatment approach will adjust to address any home, community and work re-entry issues.
